June 12 is Family Health & Fitness Day! This special day is used to emphasize the importance of recreation, physical activity, and togetherness as a family. There are a variety of ways that families can celebrate and take part in Family Health and Fitness Day. From eating a healthy diet to taking a walk or hike, we’ve compiled some of the best ways you and your family can get outside and get moving on June 12th.

How to Participate

Recreation

When it comes to recreation, you should sit down with your family and figure out what things each member enjoys doing. The opportunities are practically limitless when exercise is involved. A simple walk around the neighborhood or town can be a suitable exercise to get your heart pumping. You can also research local parks and hiking trails if you want to get out in nature and go for a longer walk. 

Here are a few ideas of recreational activities that you and your family can take part in as a group:

  • Playing a sport
  • Riding bikes
  • Going to the beach/swimming
  • Get together with another family to exercise/be active

 

Eating Healthy

Incorporating a healthy diet into your daily routine is also important for your health. Learning what foods and flavors your family enjoys can help you to create a diet and meal that suits everyone’s tastes. Want to take a break from meat? Try a vegetarian or vegan diet! There are a number of ways that you can bring healthy foods into your family. Here are a few ideas:

  • Find fruits and vegetables that everyone likes
  • Substitute meat for fish
  • Try vegetarian or vegan options
  • Cut down on sugars
